So, you want to lose weight quickly?
Who doesn’t?
Let’s face it, we’ve been conditioned to get what we want, and to get it quickly. A new television, a new car, the answer to that question that has been bugging you.
Every aspect of our lives is getting faster and faster.
Hell, do a google search for fast weight loss tricks and it takes less than a second, 0.36 seconds to be exact.
We’ve been conditioned not to wait.
So, it shouldn’t come as a shock when I tell you ‘what are your fast weight loss tricks?' is one of the most popular questions I get asked.
The questions don’t always come that bluntly.
It may be more along the lines of: ‘I’m going on holiday next week and I need to lose 5lbs to get into the dresses I’ve bought. What can I do?’
Or even: ‘My daughter is getting married next month and I want to look good in the pictures. Is there anything you can suggest?’.
Some people even want to use fast weight loss as an incentive to get on the right track: ‘I’ve been trying to lose weight for ages but nothing is working. I know if I could lose a few pounds it would encourage me to stop eating as much. Are there any tricks you can suggest?’
If you’ve read any of the other pages on this website, or seen any of my social media posts, you will know that I’m not a fan of the ‘tricks’ for fast weight loss.
They very rarely lead to a healthy lifestyle that you can stick to.
Yes, it is possible to lose weight quickly by cutting your calories drastically, but as soon as you start to eat ‘normally’ again you’ll put all the weight back on. Possibly more.
Of course, you can hit the gym every day of the week, or do that insane workout programme you’ve seen advertised on the telly. But, if you can’t keep it up, your weight loss won’t continue.
Losing weight is a journey. A journey that is going to take time.
But, if you invest that time, you will arrive at your destination, happier, healthier and slimmer. And, what’s more, it will be sustainable, because you will have learnt everything you need to know to maintain your new lifestyle/healthy body.
With all of that said, you may be wondering why I’m even addressing the question of fast weight loss.
It’s true that I don’t like the ‘tricks’, ‘tactics’ some people use to gain fast weight loss, but, I do think it’s important for you to start seeing the benefits of your healthy changes quickly.
Nobody wants to be stuck on a diet when they’re not losing weight.
It’s demoralising.
And if you’re demoralised, you’ll start to think ‘Well it doesn’t matter if I eat a salad or a pizza, I’m not going to lose weight anyway’.
So, starting to see benefits quickly is important.
If we look at it that way, the question of ‘how can I lose weight quickly’ becomes, ‘what can I do that will have the most benefit’.
That is a much more powerful place to come from.
You’re not only starting to think proactively, but you’re focusing on the journey instead of the end destination. You’re realising that this journey is going to take some time and dedication, and that can only come from you.
What one thing can you change that will have the biggest benefit to your lifestyle and weight loss goals?
Deep down, we all know what we need to do to live a healthier life, and by extension, lose weight, keep it off and have an awesome looking body.
We need to move regularly and we need to eat a diet full of fresh veggies, fruit and lean meats.
So, what, out of those two things could you do more of?
Do you exercise a lot but are maybe a bit too free with what, and how much you eat? I’m definitely guilty of this one.
If you are, would cutting down on sugary treats, to maybe one a day, have the biggest benefit. Or, could it be eating more vegetables with your main meals so you’re a bit fuller and not tempted to hit the sugar?
Is your ‘on the go’ lunch not as healthy as it could be? Full of processed sandwiches, crisps and fizzy drinks? Then maybe you should think about taking your own lunch to work. A homemade sandwich is much healthier than shop bought. And cheaper.
I like to cook too much for dinner the night before and have leftovers for lunch.
Maybe your diet is really not that bad but you’re just not moving as much as you should be. Then you’ll need to incorporate some kind of movement into your day.
Sounds like an old cliché but, parking further away from the office, taking regular screen breaks and going for a quick walk, or a walk at lunch time, are all really easy ways to get movement into your daily life.
As for a dedicated exercise session, half an hour is all you need. A quick body weight workout before dinner. A quick swim while the kids are at their after-school clubs. Why not get a ball and have a kick about with your kids?
Being active and moving should be fun. If you can find something you enjoy, you will find the time. I promise.
Next time your mind starts to dream about finding that holy grail, something that will melt away your fat in an instant, stop it.
Accept that the whole journey is going to take time, and reframe your thinking.
What one thing can I start to do/stop doing that is going to help me get to my goal?
If you keep that question, and the fundamentals of moving more and eating well, at the forefront of your mind, you won’t go wrong.
No matter where you are on your journey.
