What comes to mind when you think about Pole Dancing?
Maybe you don't give it much thought at all. Maybe you're concerned about the objectification of young women. Maybe you see a dark seedy club with lots of men sat around in long coats.
Whatever it is, I bet you don't think much about the physiques of the young ladies, and sometimes men, who are strutting their stuff.
But the thing is, they have amazing figures. Let's face it, why else would anyone want to gawp at them.
They're toned, flexible and incredibly strong.
That's why pole dancing fitness has soared in popularity of late.
But will it help you get the body of your dreams?
Well, I've said it before, and I'll probably say it again you have to do the exercise to reap the benefits.
So maybe the question should be ... Will a pole dancing class give you the motivation to drag your arse off the sofa even when it's cold, dark and raining outside and you really can't be bothered to do anything?
They certainly have for me. And here's why ... 6 reasons pole dancing workouts can get you an awesome looking bod.
Ok, let's get straight down to the nitty gritty.
Pole dancing is amazing for weight loss.
What makes it so amazing?
It's four or five workouts in one. Yoga, Pilates, bodyweight, calisthenics, endurance and strength. All in one hour's workout.
What more could you ask for?
I would suggest that you team pole dancing with a more sustained cardio workout, particularly at the beginning.
Don't get me wrong. When you're linking moves, and holding poses for a long time, your breathing and your heart rate will increase. But it does take a while to get there.
Adding in a bit of cardio into your programme will make sure you get a balanced workout from the beginning.
From the moment the class starts, until hours after, you won't stop smiling.
Whether it's because you landed on your arse with your legs in the air, or, you've nailed the spin that has been foiling you for weeks. You will smile.
And you'll smile every time you think about what happened.
It's a constant source of amusement.
It can be a bit frustrating at times, especially when you can't quite get a move. But with practice it will come and your smile will be even bigger.
Just remember ... jazz hands fixes everything.
Nobody likes the idea of being laughed at.
You might even go your whole life trying not to be laughed at. Always in control. Never letting yourself go. But that's really not healthy.
If you never lose control, you're probably never having that much fun. You'll always put yourself in situations where you know what that outcome will be. You'll never get out of that comfort zone. Never test yourself.
At a pole dancing class you have to let yourself go.
You re going to look silly and feel silly.
And yes, people will chuckle. They'll chuckle at you, they'll chuckle with you.
But the thing is, life is way too short to always be in control. To take yourself too seriously. You should be out having fun.
Learning to laugh at yourself maybe one of the greatest things about pole dancing. You just can't help it.
Throughout school we learn that children can be mean.
Girls in particular.
So it can be quite daunting going into a new environment that is predominantly women. Especially where there is the potential for you to look like an idiot.
But actually, all of the women I've come into contact with in my pole and aerial classes are so supportive.
Yes, there is laughing, see point number 3, but there's also encouragement. Genuine calls of 'that looked amazing'; 'wow, that is awesome' and 'come on you can do it'.
And when you finally get a trick that you've been trying to nail for weeks, there are shrieks of whoops and congratulations.
Women are awesome.
Just to be clear, the men in my pole class are just as supportive and awesome.
If your world turns upside down, then turn yourself upside down to meet it.
Ok, this is metaphorical.
Pole dancing workouts push you out of your comfort zone. And it's only then that you start to really appreciate what you are capable of.
Because, let's face it, it's all you.
Your strength, your flexibility, your endurance. Holding you up.
It's quite a powerful thought.
You're capable of great strength. And with pole dancing workouts, that strength only grows.
Ok, when you first think about pole dancing your mind probably automatically goes to sleezy clubs and trench coat wearing men. But if you think about the actual dance itself ... what image does that conjure up?
Sexy, graceful, beautiful?
Three words that every woman should feel.
And notice I said feel there and not look.
It's not necessarily important that you look sexy, beautiful or graceful, because how you look depends on other people's interpretation of how you look. And who cares what other people think of you?
But you should, absolutely, feel them.
You should think you are beautiful, graceful and sexy.
Everyone deserves that.
It won't be for everyone. But why not try. Where's the harm in that?
